Today, zero does not truly mean zero.
Current GHG Protocol Scope 2 guidance is disconnected from power grid reality in both space and time. For instance, consumers can declare themselves "solar powered" at night or claim to be "100% renewable" by claiming to consume renewables from a grid without any physical connection to their consumption. Such claims are misleading, and they do not effectively support the goal of using emissions reporting to drive systems change and decarbonization. True Zero describes the practice of "granular accounting," which seeks to bring emissions accounting back to reality.
True Zero means electricity consumers can only claim to use power that is deliverable to them and produced in the same hour as their consumption. It also helps drive new clean electricity by ensuring a fair allocation of existing clean power.
True Zero is communal progress towards our shared goals.
